South Brisbane is an inner city suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. It is home to 5,416 people. It connects to the city’s central business district by three bridges.

History

The area was known as Kurilpa by the local indigenous people. European settlers arrived in the first half of the 19th century and from the settlements, the city grew. South Brisbane became its own municipality in 1888. This was four years after the railway station in the suburb was opened, which contributed to a construction boom. The first tram line was opened in 1897 and ran along Stanley Street in South Brisbane.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

South Brisbane is home to a large number of heritage-listed sites and other attractions. Most of the suburb’s attractions, such as the Queensland Cultural Centre, the South Bank Parklands and the Queensland Maritime Museum, are in the South Bank precinct. It is also home to one of the campuses of Griffith University and the Southbank Institute of Technology.
