Proserpine is a rural town on the Whitsunday coast. It’s a key part of what makes the region tick, and has a population of more than 3,300.
History
Proserpine dates back to 1890, when a sugar mill was constructed in the area. The town sprang up around it, and the booming sugar industry made Proserpine one of the fastest-growing settlements in Australia. It had its own airport by the 1950s, and the Peter Faust Dam finished construction in 1990.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
A lively community, Proserpine plays host to many events throughout the year. The Proserpine Show is a yearly blowout with everything from fireworks to carnival rides, and the Harvest Festival celebrates the end of sugar crushing. Proserpine has a good selection of shops and restaurants, as well as art deco buildings and several Heritage sites. Several national parks surround the town, and it’s within driving distance of the Great Barrier Reef.
