Palm Island is an Aboriginal community located on the Great Barrier Reef. It has a population of 1,984. The community is also known as “The Mission”, “Palm Island Settlement” and “Palm Island Community”.

History

The island was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 on his voyage up the east coast of Australia. In 1914, the Australian Government moved Indigenous Peoples from a settlement on the Hull River to Palm Island. People from at least 57 different language speaking regions were relocated. They became known as the Bwgcolman people.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Palm Island is known as a tropical paradise because of its beautiful flora.

Unlike other Queensland communities, there are no street signs or traffic signals. The town’s main hub consists of a butcher, fish and chips shop, Post Office, a small supermarket and a clothes store. The Palm Island Hotel is the only place with a liquor license on the island.
