History

Gympie takes its name from the Kabi language and means “stinging tree”. When it was first established in 1887, Gympie was originally settled by European graziers. In October 1867, James Nash discovered a rich supply of gold in Gympie. This gold ended up saving Queensland from money troubles. Gold mining still plays a big role in Gympie. Every year, Gympie holds the Gympie Gold Rush Festival for 10 days in October.

Gympie has many attractions. The Gympie Gold Mining and History Museum holds many historical artefacts from the early gold mining era. The Woodworks Museum, on the other hand, Gympie’s Timber Industry.
