The residential suburb of Greenbank was named after a property of the same name belonging to William Slack. Greenbank is a mainly residential and agricultural area situated close to natural parklands. The town has a population of over 7,000 people.

History

Following the arrival of the first European settlers in the 1940s, the area was first used as a changing station for coaches. By the 1880s the local industries at the time were timber cutting and dairy farming.

In 1893 on January 23rd the newly built Greenbank Provisional School opened its doors to the first 12 pupils. The school became public in 1909 but was closed from 1943 to 1950 through lack of use.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has a community centre, library, and a state school with over 1,100 students and 72 teachers. Sport is well catered for at the Greenbank Recreation Reserve with rugby and soccer teams playing there.
