The town of Goondiwindi in Queensland is named after the Aboriginal word that means “the resting place of birds”. The town is on the Macintyre River close to the border with New South Wales and has a population of over 5,500 people which is growing by 1.4% every year.
History
The boundaries of Goondiwindi are the same as they were when the town became a municipality in 1988. The Post Office was open in the area by 1860 and before becoming a state the town was a border crossing.
The area was devastated by severe flooding in 1921 and the town’s war memorial was officially opened by Matthew Nathan, Queensland’s governor in 1949. One of the town’s most notable residents was a much-celebrated racehorse that went by the name of “ The Goondiwindi Grey”.

The area has several heritage-listed properties including the civic centre and the Customs House Museum on McLean Street. Teaching is provided at 3 schools that include 2 primaries and a secondary school.
There is a community centre, museums, and a public library in the town. Transport is provided by the major road network and Goondiwindi is a popular stopping off place with travellers. There are several hotels, motels, and restaurants in the town too.
