History
The name Goondi is taken from the native word meaning “elbow”. This refers to Goondi’s position on the elbow bend of the South Johnstone River.
In 1881, farm selections emerged in Goondi. A few years later, Colonial Sugar Refineries built a sugar mill. In 1885, the Goondi Mill made its first crushing.
In 1898, Goondi opened a school. In 1987, the Goondi Mill closed. Bundaberg Mill took over the mill.
