Based in Queensland’s Gold Coast, Currumbin is a coastal suburb. It sits in the Federal Division of McPherson and has a population of over 2,700 people.

History

There are three different interpretations of the name “Currumbin”. According to the Australia Post Office, the word means “high up” or “place where high trees grow”. Author J.G. Steele believes the name comes from the aboriginal word “kurrohmin”, meaning kangaroo. Other sources say that name means quicksand.

The first European to acquire land in Currumbin went by the name of Samuel William Grey. In 1904, a company called Isle, Love and Co advertised Currumbin’s first subdivisions. In 1920, Currumbin got its first hotel. Currumbin won the title of Australia’s cleanest beach in 2013.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Every year, Currumbin hosts the Swell Sculpture Festival. Pieces of art are laid along the Oceanway and beach. Currumbin is also home to the NRL team, the Gold Coast Titans, and the Rugby League team, the Currumbin Eagles.
