Biloela is the centre of Queensland’s Banana Shire. It lies 120km inland from the beaches of Gladstone. From Brisbane, you can reach Biloela within an hour by plane. In 2011 the town had 5,800 inhabitants.
History
The name Biloela is of Aboriginal origin and means “black or white cockatoo”. Gazetted in 1924, the town soon got its own post office and school. The first mine opened in 1942.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Biloela’s council has given the town and its surroundings the nickname “The Shire of Opportunity”. From fields for grazing and cropping to the Callide Power Stations – the region is home to a very diverse range of industries. Biloela also has two shopping centres and lots of great restaurants.
