Wyoming is a suburb of the NSW town of Gosford. It is 70 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 9,900.

History

The area was once home to the Kuringgai people.

In 1824, settler Frederick Augustus Hely purchased 1,340 acres of land. Hely named the land after the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. It was made famous by the 1809 poem ‘Gertrude of Wyoming’ by Thomas Campbell. The USA state of Wyoming is also named after the poem. The state was named years after this suburb was.

The first building was the local pub. Built by convicts in 1854, it still stands today.

Hely was the Principal Superintendent of Convicts in NSW. His mausoleum lies beside the Pacific Highway at Wyoming. The grave was designed by architect John Verge. It was recently restored after falling into disrepair.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wyoming is a predominantly residential suburb.

It has a commercial area. This includes the Wyoming Shopping Village and a number of fast-food outlets.

Wyoming is home to the football (soccer) club Wyoming Tigers.

Many residential streets in the suburb are bordered by temperate-subtropical rainforest. This offers many interesting bushwalking opportunities.
