Cath Adams has been a dedicated counsellor in Newcastle for over 20 years. Her therapeutic approach includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Narrative Therapy, plus specialised techniques like somatic healing and inner child therapy based on individual needs.

At Cath Adams Counselling, we adopt a holistic and integrative approach to therapy. Our core therapeutic modalities include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a well-established technique that helps individuals manage their problems by changing the way they think and behave.

It is particularly effective in treating anxiety and depression and is congruent with our goal-oriented therapy setting. Narrative Therapy, on the other hand, allows clients to separate themselves from their problems and encourages them to rely on their own skillsets to reduce the influence of problems in their lives.

Our ultimate aim is to guide each client through their personal challenges towards a stronger and happier life, enhancing their overall sense of well-being. From the moment you step into our practice or start your first session, whether remotely or in-person, your journey becomes the focus of our work together. We navigate the path to peace of mind collaboratively, allowing for a tailored therapeutic experience that recognises your unique circumstances and adjusts to your evolving needs.

We at Cath Adams Counselling are more than just a counselling service; we are a community dedicated to better mental health and a supportive partner on your journey towards a healthier psyche. Whether you are facing life's typical ups and downs or dealing with more complex psychological issues, we are here to support you with a compassionate approach and professional expertise. Yes, we offer counselling services for anger management.

  • Due to circumstances if my original goal/goals change, can a new or different plan be implemented as well?

Yes, a new or different plan can be implemented if your original goal/goals change due to circumstances.

  • Are you registered with a professional counselling association?

Yes I am registered with the Australian Counselling Association

  • Does it make a difference with a therapists gender?

It is up to the client regarding preference of a therapists gender, however, it is always up to the therapist to be professional and empathetic.

  • How do I know which counsellor to choose?

It is a good idea to research which approach counsellors use by exploring their websites and updating your knowledge on their approaches to see if they would be appropriate for your needs and circumstances.

  • Is counselling very different than talking about problems/feelings with a supportive friend?

Yes. When someone sees a counsellor, an objective and empathetic approach is used in order to work with and manage the issue/s more effectively. Complete confidentiality is assured thus being completely open about feelings promotes trust and builds rapport. When discussing things with a friend they are normally subjective due to the nature of the relationship you have with them and cannot offer the same advice without judgement.

  • Does a counsellor have to mandatory report?

At the beginning of the counselling process, I discuss confidentiality and mandatory reporting. Mandatory reporting involves letting the police or mental health team know if a client has disclosed they are going to harm themselves or another person. Should a client disclose that to me, this is re-enforced then acted upon by alerting the appropriate support services
