The lakeside suburb of Toronto situated on the shore of Lake Macquarie is 28km from Newcastle’s central business district. The region is a commercial centre for the large suburbs of the Lake’s western shore area. The suburb has a population of nearly 5,500 people.

History

Named after Toronto in Canada, the subdivision of the land coincided with the arrival of the railway in 1887. The name “Toronto” is said to taken from the Native American Mohawk word “tkaronto”, which means “where there are trees standing in the water”.

The first settlers led by the Reverend Threlkeld in 1829 established an Aboriginal Mission in the area. This was closed in 1841 and coal in the region became a major asset to the growth of the community.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb boasts 3 public schools and two private teaching facilities. There are also plenty of shops in the area including 3 major supermarkets and several clothing shops. Local health care is provided by a polyclinic, private hospital, and the Alec Rice Centre.

Along with a Police Station, Fire Service, and Ambulance Station, that serves the Western Lake Macquarie area, there is also a commercial centre on the High Street. This area is called “The Boulevard” and stretches for over a kilometre.
