Tomerong is a small village in New South Wales. It’s situated in the South Coast region, 180km south of Sydney. Tomerong falls under the City of Shoalhaven local government area, and has a population of more than 900.

History

Named after an Aboriginal phrase meaning “tall trees”, Tomerong was settled by Europeans in the 1830s. Surrounded by forestland, the town quickly grew as a thriving timber hub. By 1862, a hotel, school and post office had opened for business. The town had a church and general store by 1882, and the famous School of Arts was built in 1926. Although the last sawmill closed in 1980, Tomerong remains a popular stop for tourists.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thanks to its lush forests and proximity to Jervis Bay, Tomerong receives many visitors. The School of Arts holds a range of events and performances throughout the year, and the monthly village market draws in big crowds. “Maker and Baker” is held at Union Church Tomerong, offering boutique clothes, gourmet food, handmade jewellery, and various other bits and bobs.
