Tighes Hill is an industrial suburb in the city of Newcastle. It sits 5km north-west of the central business district, and has a population of more than 1,600.

History

Named after a fellow called A.A.P. Tighe, Tighes Hill grew steadily from the 1870s onwards. It began with a bridge over Throsby Creek, and a school, church and post office soon followed. Tighes Hill joined the tram line in 1891, and continued to develop as an industrial suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

In recent years, Tighes Hill has seen a notable shift toward residential usage. It’s very close to the central business district, and has become popular with professionals looking to commute. The Tighes Hill School of Arts is a beautiful old gallery that recently reopened, and the Newcastle campus of the Hunter Institute of TAFE is also based here. Tighes Hill has kept many of its older buildings intact, despite the push for modern housing.
