Taree is a town with a population of around 26,400 people, located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. It is located 16km from the Tasman Sea and lies at the centre of a vast agricultural area.

History

Taree was established in 1831 by William Wynter, whose father-in-law, Henry Flett went on to declare the area a private town in 1854 selling 40 lots for development. It became a municipality in 1844 but didn’t grow significantly until the North Coast railway line arrived in 1913.

Taree’s name comes from the Biripi word ‘tarrebit’ which means ‘tree by the river’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Taree is home to the ‘The Big Oyster’ a large model of an oyster which now sits on top of a car dealership. Built in honour of the local oyster industry based on the Manning River it still attracts tourists but is often known locally as ‘The Big Mistake.’

Elsewhere, Taree has an art gallery, an aquatic centre, and the 505 seat Manning Entertainment Centre which hosts concerts and shows throughout the year.
