Port Macquarie is a coastal town in the state of New South Wales with a population of over 45,300. It is located on the Tasman Sea coast and 390 kilometres north of Sydney.

History

The area was first visited by Europeans and a man called John Oxley in 1818. He named Port Macquarie after Lachlan Macquarie who was the Governor of New South Wales.

In 1821, Port Macquarie became the location for convicts who had committed crimes in New South Wales. Local aborigines would return escaping prisoners in return for blankets and tobacco.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb has two shopping centres and many specialty shops. It also has a marina and a popular arts, conference and entertainment centre.

There are also many beaches including Town Beach, Shelly Beach and Lighthouse Beach to name a few. However, Port Macquarie is best known for its koala population and extensive waterways.
