History

Newtown was an area known by the Cadigal tribe of the Eora people, who travelled from the south. By the early 19th century it had become a significant farming and residential area. By the mid 20th century affordable housing drew significant numbers of European migrants and university students to Newton, making the area the diverse place it is today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Newton has a long-standing, vibrant live music scene. King Street is home not only to the area’s best shopping, but The Sandringham venue, which has hosted gigs since the 1980s. Newton is also a prominent area for graffiti and street art, with an eye-catching mural of Martin Luther King Jr on Gowrie Street.
