The town of Muswellbrook is in the Upper Hunter Region between Sydney and Newcastle. The area is well known for coal mining and horse breeding. It has also known for quality dining and wine making. The town has a population of almost 13,000 people.

History

Until the first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s it was home to the Wongarra and Kamilaroi Aboriginal peoples. The township was officially gazetted as Muswellbrook in 1833 on the 23rd of October.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has 6 schools including 2 public institutions and a pre-School Kindergarten. The region is also a popular venue for art events including the Blue Heeler Film Festival and the NAIDOC week art awards. The town also hosts heavy horse field days and the Muswellbrook Carnivale.

Because it is situated at the junction of the main Northern and Merriwa railway lines, the town has excellent transport links. It is also an important rail freight terminal for the onward transport of coal. Road links are via the Denman Road connection onto the Golden Highway and there is also an interstate coach service.
