Murwillumbah is a rural town in the Tweed Shire region of New South Wales. It’s at the extreme north of the state, sitting just 13km from the Queensland border. Murwillumbah has a population of more than 8,500.

History

This area was first inhabited by the Bundjalung people. The name “Murwillumbah” comes from their language, and means “camping place”. In the 1840s, a European lumber community began to develop around the River Tumbulgum. In 1902, Murwillumbah was declared the region’s central hub. Despite its prosperity and stunning locale, Murwillumbah has suffered several calamities. A huge fire ravaged the town in 1907, and it was the site of Australia’s biggest bank robbery in 1978.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area around Murwillumbah is simply gorgeous. The lush plains, rolling hills and vast lakes encompass five separate national parks. Wine and gourmet food are plentiful, and the town features many boutique shops. The Tweed River Art Gallery and Murwillumbah Historical Society Museum are also based here.
