Mullumbimby is a town in New South Wales. It’s found in the Northern Rivers region, and falls within the Byron Shire. Mullumbimby lies in the shadow of Mt Chincogan, nestled away in the Brunswick Valley. It has a population of more than 3,100.

History

The Bundjalung people are the traditional keepers of the Brunswick Valley. Europeans arrived in the mid-19th century, and formed a settlement on the Brunswick River. Mullumbimby started as a camp in the 1850s, before growing into a small village. Red cedar trees abounded, and the town enjoyed a thriving timber industry. Mullumbimby boomed, and became its own municipality in 1908. In 1980, however, it had to merge with the Byron Shire

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mullumbimby became famous in the 1970s for its strong counter-cultural leanings. It still remains a hub for the alternative and independent, attracting many different types of people. With no more logging, farming is now central to the region’s economy. The farmers market is like a mini-festival every week, with live music and tons of local produce. Brunswick Valley Historical Museum is built into the town’s old post office. It offers great insight into Mullumbimby’s storied past.
