Mudgee is a town on the edge of the Sydney Basin. It has a population of 9,830.
History

James Blackman was Mudgee’s first European settler. He crossed the nearby Cudgegong River in 1821. Later, George and Henry Cox established the Menah run. There was conflict between the settlers and the local Wiradjuri people.

The population of Mudgee exploded in 1851. Population growth was a result of the gold rush in New South Wales. The town officially became a municipality in 1860. Gold mining declined in the second half of the 19th century. The wool and wine industries kept Mudgee’s economy going.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mudgee is home to several schools, colleges, churches, and health facilities. The town also has a number of historic buildings. These include Mudgee Post Office, Mudgee Railway Station, Mudgee Town Hall, and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

Wine making is still a major part of the town’s economy.
