Moulamein is a small village with 330 inhabitants in Murray River Council. It lies 70 kilometres northeast of Swan Hill. At Moulamein, the Edward River meets Billabong Creek. The location is one possible explanation for how the town got its name. Moulamein means “the meeting of the waters” in one local Aboriginal language.

History

The first Europeans arrived in 1830 making it the Riverina’s oldest township. However, many historians doubt such an early settlement. In the 1840s, Augustus Morris came to the region looking for new grazing lands. That is when Moulamein was first mentioned in an official capacity. Back then the town was one of the region’s major administrative centres.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today Moulamein is a quiet and small town, but you can find plenty to do. It features a 12 ha lake, which is a great place for observing the local wildlife. Moulamein is also home to some old buildings including the restored Old Court House.
