Moree is a town in New South Wales. It’s located in the Moree Plains Shire, right on top of the Mehi River. The town has a population of more than 9,300.
History
The land around Moree originally belonged to the Kamilaroi people. In fact, the word “Moree” actually means “long watering hole” in the Kamilaroi language. By 1861, European settlers had built a general store, post office and inn along the bank of the river. Moree became a town in 1863, and proceeded to blossom into an agricultural powerhouse. Moree was part of the Freedom Bus Ride of 1965, which raised awareness of discrimination against Indigenous Australians.

A prosperous town, Moree has plenty to see and do. Its Heritage-listed sites include the Moree Club, Moree Courthouse and the Victoria Hotel, and there are many galleries and museums. Rocket Park and Mary Brand Park are beautiful settings for a picnic, you can pick up some lovely handmade wares at The Gift Bucket.
