Monterey is a coastal suburb of Sydney. It forms part of the Bayside Council local government area, and sits 15km south of Sydney’s central business district. Monterey has a population of more than 4,300.

History

The Monterey area used to be shared between Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate. It didn’t become its own suburb until 1972. The area already had several streets with California-based names, so the new suburb was christened Monterey.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Monterey is a popular beachside spot. Lady Robinsons Beach stretches along its eastern side, and is good for swimming and kitesurfing. The beach also offers spectacular views of the Sydney skyline. Scarborough Park borders Monterey to the west, adding lush trees and a large pond to the suburb’s charms. The suburb features various eateries and cafes, such as the Shack, Cake Escape and Monterey Pizza Cafe. A selection of shops can be browsed on Chuter Avenue.
