Miranda is a suburb of southern Sydney, 24km south of the CBD in the Sutherland Shire. It has a population of over 2000.

History

In the 1800s, Thomas Holt owned land from Sutherland to Cronulla. The suburb was named by James Murphy, the manager of the Holt estate, after a character in William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. He gave it this name as he thought it was “a soft, euphonious, musical and appropriate name for a beautiful place”.

By the 1920s, tteam trams ran between Cronulla and Sutherland via Miranda. In 1923, there were five shops in Miranda. These included a post office and a butchers.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is known for the Westfield Miranda shopping centre next to the Miranda railway station. It was once notable for being the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

Miranda also has a shopping strip that runs along The Kingsway and Kiora Road.
