Macquarie Fields is situated in New South Wales and 42 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district. It is part of the Macarthur region and has an estimated population of 13,000.

History

The Darug people of western Sydney were the first to live in the suburb. They lived in huts and spent time making spears, boomerangs and tomahawks. In 1788, they were forced off the land by British settlers.

Macquarie Fields was given its name by a man called James Meehan in honour of the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie. Meehan surveyed the area in the 19th century and used some of the land to grow fruit trees and cereal crops, as well as graze livestock.

There are lots of great facilities in Macquarie Fields including schools, leisure centres, parks and nature reserves. The area also has a library, skate park, shopping centre, beach and international standard golf course.

When it comes to transport links, there is the railway station and five Busabout bus routes. Macquarie Fields doesn’t see much road traffic, which also helps to make it a pleasant place to live.
