Hurstville is a large, multi-cultural suburb of Sydney with a population of over 26,000 people. It is located 10km south of the main Sydney central business district but has become a commercial centre itself.

History

Hurstville’s name comes from the old English words “hurst”, which means “a wooded eminence”, and “ville” meaning “town”.

When the First Fleet arrived in 1788, the area was inhabited by a group of indigenous Australians from the Eora tribe. First contact was mainly peaceful with food and drink shared between the settlers and the inhabitants. The first land grants in the area were received by Captain John Towson and his brother Robert in 1808.

Hurstville is a central business district of the southern suburbs of Sydney and is home to the Westfield Hurstville. Redeveloped in 2015, it is the largest shopping centre in the St George area.
