Phillip is a suburb in Canberra with a population of over 2,000. It is in the district of Woden Valley and contains the district’s main commercial centre, Woden Town Centre.

History

Phillip is named to honour Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of NSW. A fairly new town, the name was gazetted in 1966. The streets in the town are named after the First, Second, and Third Fleets.

In the 1970s, The Swinger Hill housing estate was built as an estate of mixed townhouses. The streets in Swinger Hill estate are all named after architects. Phillip is the commercial centre of Woden and is home to many of the area’s main facilities.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Phillip is home to Westfield Woden shopping centre, a large shopping centre with around 260 stores and services, and the Southside campus of the Canberra Institute of Technology.

The suburb has many sporting facilities including Phillip Enclosed Oval and Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre.
