Palmerston is a Canberra suburb located 13.6km north of the central business district. It’s based in the Gungahlin district, and has a population of more than 5,700.

History

Palmerston is named in honour of George Thomas Palmer. He was a settler in the Canberra region in the 1830s, who founded a place called Palmerville. This would go on to become Ginninderra. Palmerston was gazetted in 1991. It officially kicked off in 1994 with the opening of Palmerston Primary School.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Palmerston is made up of modern housing estates. It’s known for having a high number of fruit trees, such as plum and apple. A small commercial hub exists towards the middle of the suburb. This includes shops, medical facilities and a community centre.

Palmerston borders two different nature reserves. Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve is on the eastern border. Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve can be found towards the south. In addition, Gungahlin Pond is just past the western border in Blacksmith’s Shop. Palmerston is close to Cockington Green Gardens, as well as the National Dinosaur Museum.
