Nicholls is a suburb of Canberra. 13km from the centre of Canberra in the district of Gungahlin, it has a population of around 7,000.

History

The suburb was named to honour the former Governor of South Australia, Sir Douglas Nicholls. The suburb contains the remnants of Ginninderra Village, which was one of the earliest settlements in the Canberra region. This settlement included the historic Ginninderra Schoolhouse which was built in 1883.

In 1979, a miniature English village, Cockington Green, opened for business in Ginninderra Village. In 1991, the suburb was gazetted. All the streets in Nicholls are named to honour various sportspeople.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to The Lakes Golf Course, which is a championship par 72-hole golf course that was designed by Ted Parslow and measures 6,198 metres. Located amongst lakes, the golf course is picturesque. The golf club has had a million dollars spent on it each year for the last few years.
