Narrabundah is an established garden suburb of Canberra. In the inner south of the city, it has a population of over 5,600.

History

It gets its name from the Ngunnawal word “Narrabundah” which translates to “bird of prey”. This translation is celebrated by a sculpture in the park which is opposite the shops. The name was taken from the Parish of Narrabundah, which is a part of the cadastral division of Murray. The suburb was originally part of the Parish of Queanbeyan.

In 1928 the name was gazetted. It was the last of the inner-south suburbs to be developed starting in 1947, as this was delayed by WW2.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to many parks including “Rocky Knoll” park in upper Narrabundah which is famous for its panoramic views over Canberra.

Shops in the suburb include many restaurants, two daytime cafes, and the popular Narrabundah Takeaway. It is home to the Canberra Cavalry baseball team.
