Macarthur is a residential suburb in Tuggeranong, Canberra. It was once known for its motorsport activities. It has a population of 1,460. It is located near the towns of Fadden and Gilmore.

History

The area is named after John Macarthur. He was a founder of Australia’s Merino wool industry. It was gazetted in 1982. The wool industry inspired the street names.

In 1978, the area was used as a motorsport park. Riders used Coyne Street, Jackie Howe Crescent, Merriman Crescent and Carson Street to from the circuit. Developers built over the circuit when the suburb was developed in 1982.

Wanniassa Hills, part of the Canberra National Park, are located in Macarthur. It also has a horse holding paddock.
