Hughes is a suburb of Canberra found in the Woden Valley district. It’s situated 9km south of the central business district, and borders on the suburbs of Phillip, Curtin, Deakin and Garran. Hughes has a population of more than 3,000.

History

Gazetted in 1962, the suburb of Hughes began development the following year. It was named in honour of William Morris “Billy” Hughes, who served as Australia’s prime minister between 1915 and 1923. Hughes was designed as a peaceful residential suburb, and largely remains one to this day.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hughes features several parks and sports facilities, including North Woden Tennis Club and Clarrie Hermes Park. The east of the suburb is bordered by the Federal Golf Club. Hughes is also home to Bonnie Beggs Textile School, as well as South East Archaeology. A small shopping hub handles most local needs, with a bakery, takeaway, pharmacy, hairdresser, supermarket and more.
