Holder is part of the Western Creek District of Canberra and is located 13km south-west of Canberra’s city centre. It has a population of 2,711 and is purely a residential area.

History

Holder was named after Sir Frederick William Holder, the first Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives. All streets in Holder are named after prominent Australian surveyors.

The 2003 Canberra Bushfires destroyed 31 homes in Holder. Houses on Dixon Drive were badly damaged. Floating embers ignited a few houses further in the suburb. Otherwise the rest of the town was unscathed.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is mainly residential housing. Most houses were built in the 1970’s. Holder had it’s own primary school and high school, but both have closed down. St Jude’s Catholic School and Canberra Montessori School are the only schools within the suburb. The closest public schools are located in Duffy.
